NINETEEN SOMETHINGS TO SAY TO CHILDREN...

NINETEEN SOMETHINGS TO SAY TO CHILDREN
  1. I love you! There is nothing that will make me stop loving you. Nothing you could do or say or think will ever change that.
  2. You are amazing! I look at you with wonder! Not just at what you can do, but who you are. There is no one like you. No one!
  3. It's all right to cry. People cry for all kinds of reasons: when they are hurt, sad, glad, or worried; when they are angry, afraid, or lonely. Big people cry too. I do.
  4. You've made a mistake. That was wrong. People make mistakes. I do. Is it something we can fix? What can we do? It's all over. You can start fresh. I know you are sorry. I forgive you.
  5. You did the right thing. That was scary or hard. Even though it wasn't easy, you did it. I am proud of you; you should be too.
  6. I'm sorry. Forgive me. I made a mistake.
  7. You can change your mind. It's good to decide, but it is also fine to change.
  8. What a great idea! You were really thinking! How did you come up with that? Tell me more. Your mind is clever!
  9. That was kind. You did something helpful and thoughtful for that person. That must make you feel good inside. Thank you!
  10. I have a surprise for you. It's not your birthday. It's for no reason at all. Just a surprise, a little one, but a surprise.
  11. I can wait. We have time. You don't have to hurry this time.
  12. What would you like to do? It's your turn to pick. You have great ideas. It's important to follow your special interests.
  13. Tell me about it. I'd like to hear more. And then what happened? I'll listen.
  14. I'm right here. I won't leave without saying good-bye. I am watching you. I am listening to you.
  15. Please and Thank You. These are important words. If I forget to use them, will you remind me?
  16. I missed you. I think about you when we are not together!
  17. Just try. A little bit. One taste, one step. You might like it. Let's see. I'll help you if you need it. I think you can do it.
  18. I'll help you. I heard you call me, here I am. How can I help you? If we both work together, we can get this done. I know you can do it by yourself, but I'm glad to help since you asked.
  19. What do you wish for? Even if it's not yet time for birthday candles and we don't have a wishbone, it's still fun to hear about what you wish for, hope for, and dream about.

Little Angels

So, the video camera system came on the 7th. I was able to install one camera in CDQ and Poufy's room Thursday night.

Can you just hear my sigh of relief?

I wish we would have done this sooner.

See, to my mortification, the day that the cameras were in transit to our home, I discovered CDQ was BITING Poufy all over her arms and God knows where else. Poufy never cried or screamed or anything.  CDQ said she did it because she didn't want Poufy to talk.  I never wanted to knock someone's teeth out more (well except their mother's) than I did at that moment.  I don't care if people get mad, but if you could see what she did to Poufy...it's awful.  I don't know why Poufy didn't say anything.

I am seriously think CDQ is going to have to be institutionalized. I worry she is going to be the serial killer.  Things that she does...scary.

The other thing I discovered was that Poufy spends her days m@sterbating in front of CDQ. That however doesn't bother CDQ. Go figure. They both traumatize me.

Well, I got the camera in Friday night and I LOVE them. They are infrared so I can see them in the dark too.  After it was set up, I walked over and looked at them on the screen and they were both laying there quietly. I remarked "Aww, they are like little angels now." and I could see a huge smile spread across Poufy's face and CDQ turned to her side and covered her face but I knew she was smiling huge too.

This morning rather than the 4 am wake up that we usually get over the monitor, I looked in on them on the screen and they were both fast asleep at almost 9 am!  I'm talking drooling on their pillow sleep.

At dinner, this was the convo...

CDQ: I like the camera.
Poufy: ME TOO!
CDQ: I feel better.
Me: Do you feel safe?
The oldest: Safe?
Poufy: YEAH!
CDQ: I do *shaking head up and down*
The oldest: Why don't they feel safe?

Isn't it crazy how they are scared of each other and torture each other but they don't make the connection that they don't have to be that way towards each other and that they are causing their own situations? Tonight I gave them all sleepy time tea.

I also was able to install a second camera in the boy and SS's room. I think I will be moving SS out of that room soon.  It's more peaceful with the cameras. The boy doesn't get the concept that we can see what he's doing.  It's funny because I'll yell for him to stop and I see him lift his head and look around confused. LOL!  Then he resumes what he's doing until I tell him in detail to stop.  *shaking my head*

I have two more cameras to install. One in the oldest's bedroom, where SS will eventually move back into, and one for the hallway.

I can't tell you how much I love these cameras.  It's only been a day but it was such a dramatic change since they know we are watching. I don't even think it has anything to do with them getting in trouble but it seems to give them peace of mind knowing.

Oh, the other thing that happened. Hubbins sent CDQ out of the kitchen during tea time for something she had done, I think he had told her to stop messing around because she was going to end up with hot tea coming out of her nose or something.  Anyway, normally, she would have went into the room and pounded her legs with her fists or slammed her head against the wall or both. This time she just sat there biting her nails but it looked like she was thinking.

My house is so quiet. Everyone is really asleep.  I am happy.

Next time I will tell you how I was taken by the electrician. I can't believe I handed over my entire paycheck to him. Literally. I have $5 left. My 100 hours of work to his 3 hours...ARGH!

Too full for dessert...

Progress! Progress! Progress!

All I am going to say about CDQ and Poufy is that they are making zero effort. Poufy's *still* riding the birthday train and I think it has something to do with CDQ's b-day coming up. The oldest is also going to be celebrating her b-day this month but thankfully, it's just the other two who are passengers...

However, I have to say that everyone was befuddled today when the boy and SS said they were full. I made a very kid friendly dinner. Cheeseburgers and kraft mac'n cheese (which I never make). The boy ate half of his servings and SS ate it all but wanted no seconds. This, my friends is huge!
They each had one of Sheri's shortbread chocolate dipped cookies and SS couldn't finish hers.

Why is this so huge? Because they are H-A-P-P-Y. They didn't need to stuff themselves to feel loved or feel comforted. They are happy within themselves...even if it's just for today and that moment. It's the first time ever since their placement. They were smiling and not upset about being denied thirds or maybe even there not being seconds (happens sometimes). They were laughing and playing with the cats and dancing. It was what I would imagine normal would be for them.

I've been using "Mom" and "Dad" with them more often. I also know that reward systems shouldn't really appeal to them but for these two they seemed to have moved to a level where they need that recognition from us. "Super Kid!", "Great Job!", etc... They just beam. Oh and it's not directly stated to them. I've found when I do that they stare at the floor and they are unresponsive most of the time.

Some examples, a good attitude certificate casually left under a bowl of cereal (breakfast). A tag that says we love them and they did a great job following the rules attached to a cookie(snack). (I know all food related, but(!) the food isn't a reward, it's what they would normally eat and I plan on moving away from the food to other undisclosed locations (hee hee! Yeah, I am having fun with (some of )my kids!). It's all very discreet, like a secret. They don't show the excitement to us, but we can hear them talking to each other. ( I don't stick around when I leave something behind, that way they don't feel like they have to do something or say anything.) I should also note that hugs and the L word are getting thrown around like crazy at bedtime.

It all started with me yelling "Good night! I *might* love you !" and giggling like I needed to be committed. I don't know why I did it, or even said "might" but they ALL thought it was hilarious and yelled out that they loved me. Even the ones who were hating me all day. lol

But of course, if it's not one thing, it is another. I got a letter from the state of California that sent me into fits. The only thing the state of California promised us was AAP (Adoption Assistance Program). They said no matter what it was a guarantee and that we could really count on it. For some of you who have been reading a long time, you will remember when we almost lost our house because of California's promises. We believed them because this is a Federal program.

At any rate, this letter said we may or may not get the assistance next month or any other month and that maybe if we did it would be less than we usually get. I couldn't believe what I was reading. I felt so stupid. The new van, the oldest's tuition... why did I trust them?

Then I thought...wait a minute. This is from the county. AAP is a federal program maybe they aren't talking about us. So, I called. Yes, it's us. At the risk of sounding prejudice, I would have given my right arm to talk to a high school educated English speaker who could understand what I was saying. I could barely understand what the woman was saying and she must not have a clue about how funding works.

I asked her if AAP wasn't a federal program. She said it was, then I asked her where the funds had gone. She doesn't know. She just knows Sacramento said they don't have it. I asked her if the state had misused the funds. She got defensive.

Um, well, what am I to think? The federal government gives the state the money to disburse to the county, if the state doesn't have the money to give to the county and she's not saying the feds didn't give it to them, excuse my french, but where the fuck did the money go?

Ok, so giving the benefit of the doubt, say that the feds only allocated for so much and California had more families than they thought they were going to have on AAP. I asked what the fiscal year for the state was. I might as well have asked her if martians take dumps because she had no idea. I asked that thinking maybe when the fiscal year for the state ended and started over they would have a new budget.

She didn't get this. at. all.

She was saying how the state was a mess and it was the government,etc... I said "Well, there is a lot to fix because of Bush." to which she replied (and this left me speechless) "Well, if things weren't the way they are right now, the Democrats wouldn't have had a chance."

*sound of crickets chirping*

Like I should be fucking thanking my stars for monkey boy or something? Or should I be thinking those pair of "Mavericks" would have been the rightful messiahs? Pluheeze!

At that point, I knew I was wasting my breath. When I regained composure I chuckled. She said "while that's the way I feel." I chuckled some more. She said something more about the stimulus package not working, I sat there thinking and wondering how the hell this woman still had a job, how the hell she held a Master's degree, how the hell she didn't know the process for her position and how the hell she was afforded a vote barely being able to speak the language clear enough to be understood.

She kept babbling nonsense about e-mailing and calling, etc... I just kept saying ok, trying to end the call, knowing I wasn't going to get an intelligent informed answer. Then what made me lose my shit. "Do YOU understand?" she said to me. * I know!*

I fucking understand alright... I'm screwed.

IF this is to happen, I will be given 10 days notice. Which in actuality will be less than that since I have to wait for the letter in the mail. Ten.days.

I sit here thinking, one- I can't work anymore than I already am. I am working 45 hours a week. I can't work out of my home. Two, who the hell am I kidding, there isn't a single job opening in sight. It's been on the news every night.

I've been "working" on somethings for an etsy store. But last night, Hubbins was not doing well. He had me scared. He's back on antibiotics for an infection. Although, one pressure sore has healed, another is very close, the worst one is still not better. It tries and then it regresses.

He had me take out his blood pressure cuff and he was scared. I can't even begin to describe the levels of fear and anxiety that go through me. I feel like I can just die. Then I start to berate myself. How can I think I can do anything but be here? However it's going to sound. I am stuck here. I can't trust anyone else. I will never be able to hold down a job as long as Hubbins is alive. Even with an etsy store, I will only be able to sell inventory and not take on any jobs with deadlines.

I never know when his health will turn. I am so afraid for the next time... I'm afraid I will have to send Hubbins to the hospital alone. I have no help with the kids. Nothing. Some people think that might not be a big deal, but after witnessing Hubs almost be killed by an ICU nurse WHILE I was in the room (the first and last time I fell asleep that whole week), after his wishes were ignored and EVEN his requests to speak to his Doctor who was in hearing distance were denied. It scares me. Hubbins can't get up, can't lift a finger, can't yell. I've been with him when they put him at the end of the hallway, far away from the nurse's station. He can't yell out, he can't press a button, or pick up a phone. How was he supposed to call a nurse?

I know these are just things I have to deal with and hope and pray never happen. But I can't help but live in fear and I can't seem to control that fear anymore. Like the situation it can't be helped or avoided when it comes.

So I sit and wait. Maybe it's naivety. Maybe it's just plain out stupidity.

But I don't think MY President will fail me.

That other thing that happened Tuesday night

In the previous post I briefly mentioned being able to take two children to catechism.

The boy ended up at the library but CDQ stayed for her class. They hadn't been to class in a few weeks due to behavior so I was talking to the teacher to see if there was anything we needed to do to catch her up.

But while the teacher was talking, I heard one girl ask CDQ who she was voting for. (And BTW, my kids have had arguments at the dinner table who they are going to vote for and why. It's amazing what they retain but I'm not entirely convinced they actually understand what they are saying.lol) CDQ said Obama and the girl's voice went down in disgust.

"You're going to vote for Obama? Do you know he's for abortion."
She hissed the last part at CDQ.

I wish I was exaggerating.

By this point I wasn't even listening to the instructor, but was watching what was taking place. CDQ looked taken aback by this girl who had such a look of disgust and had literally shrunk back away from her in her chair.

People may disagree with me, and I do understand that this is someone else's child but my child was involved too.

From across the room I said "Uh, uh. You are not going to do that to her. She does not need you saying those things to her just because she doesn't believe the same things you do. Just like you have a choice so does she."

The instructor who was still talking to me asked what was going on. I told her that my daughter didn't need to be brainwashed to believe the same things. She told me she had just been asking the kids who they were voting for in the election when we came in. I also told her we don't align ourselves with everything the church says.

I don't. To me, God and religion are two very different things. To me there is God. Then there is religion which is man made and prone to error. I will not blame God for the things that people do.

I was livid that this was happening. This is America: Freedom, choice, etc... and this is Catechism: no judgement, no hate, etc...

I continued to speak to the teacher and when I was done I went up to CDQ and I told her that I wanted her to understand that Obama is not for abortion. He's for a woman's right to choose because in the end it's a woman's choice and no one elses.

I don't want her growing up and believing that it is someone else's fault women have abortions. Because whether people like or not, whether it is legal or not, there will be abortions. If she ends up having an abortion in life, she has no one else to blame but herself. ( of course there are exceptions: rape, health, etc.) I want her to grow up knowing that should she put herself in a situation where she has been irresponsible, she can find herself at this predicament that only she can decide. She has to know that she has to be responsible for whatever outcome of her actions and how it's not to be taken lightly. She has to know where she stands before she ever comes to that crossroad, if ever. She has to know these things so she can prevent it. THAT is the best way I feel I can teach my kids about abortion. It is a slippery slope and it is not black and white.

When I went to pick CDQ up she was telling the other kids how she was told she should vote for McCain because she is white and that all the white people should vote for McCain. Apparently, they also told a black child that she should vote for Obama because she is black. This caused the girl to cry. They were about to break into groups where there would be a McCain table and only "McCain Lovers" could sit there and an Obama table where only "Obama Lovers" could sit.

If you are saying WTF? So was I. I asked her what the teacher did and she told me that the teacher told the kids they were going too far. If you ask me, the teacher let this go too far and the fact that she's the one who started it quite frankly pisses me off.

What God heard from me at Church today and what he might have said back...

for some reason the kids were awful today. Some of them are sick but even so yesterday was a perfect day. Today...not so perfect.

Before Church, everyone was scurrying around because at the last minute we decided to go to the Spanish mass since we had to be there for a first confession meeting at about the same time mass was ending.

Actually, we've been trying all the different mass times since we are trying to find the "right" one for us. Now that we had the middle seat installed we can do things because there is a seat in the van for everyone.

Anyway, at Church, we found pews where I thought we would be out of the way when people went up for communion. The thing was that the kids had to sit behind Hubs and Me. Well they seemed to think that made them invisible or something.

They talked and fought and shoved and everything you can think of. I was mortified. No body else seemed to mind but I did. I kept shooting them looks that they seemed to be ignoring. So, finally during the sign of peace, I was able to say something. It went like this:

Me to CDQ: Peace be with you andyoubetternotshoveanybodyagainscootover.
Me to the boy: Peace be with you, youneedtocutitoutandbehavemakesureyoukneel.
Me to Strawberry Shortcake: Peace be with you, shutupnow.

Lovely, eh?

I glanced up to see the woman directly behind them staring at me with a huge grin on her face. I was embarrassed but what else was I supposed to do?

Afterwards, a woman came up to me and whispered in my ear "Your girls are so well behaved, I'm proud of you." It was so strange. When she whispered that to me I was facing the crucifix and because I am short and she was taller I was looking up towards Jesus on the cross. It was a whisper and then it was gone...

Life is interesting.

Why I Went Off On the School Nurses...

Lately I have been dealing A LOT with school nurses.

My kids seem to gravitate towards them instead of coming to us. The therapist says they need to learn to rely on us and not other people.

How do I accomplish that when everyone else feels so sorry for these kids that they kiss their asses. (excuse my language but I am livid).

See, Poufy gets hurt...she scabs over and then she picks it to make it bleed so that she can get a band aid from the school nurse.

This because the school nurse will say "Oh, poor baby, you have an owie, what happened?" and it's all lollipops and rainbows.

But when they come to me or Hubs, it's not like that and it won't be. Yes, maybe when she fell but not in the third week where she has repeatedly ripped the scab off for a princess band aid. At that point it's a lecture about how she is going to regret it when she is all scabbed up and won't want to wear dresses that show her knees and she will hate them...not to mention how she is making herself prone to infection.

The boy, when he needs a dose of kiss ass, he "hits" his head on things in the playground. That way when he goes they tell him "how tough it is to be the baby." He's not the baby. Bella is. Just because she is dead doesn't mean he gets to be lazy and pampered. Do I sound like a bitch? Probably.

But he's 6 and he thinks he can throw his clothes out in the hallway and demand his sisters put them away. Do they (the nurses)know that? No. Do they know that he has issues with maturity and by treating him like he is 2 instead of 6, they are helping him regress. no. Do they realize even a minute of that strokes him enough. no.

But I bet they think I am a bitch.

Last night Hubs was having trouble with his catheter and autonomic dysreflexia AND diaphoresis. This causes spikes in blood pressure which can also lead to stroke. I had plans to work on him today to see if we could figure out what is going on.

Fast forward to this morning. Strawberry Shortcake. I TOLD her to stay away from her brother. I kept catching her there in his room. Now she is sick. I was going to keep her home this morning. But she didn't have a fever and when I asked her she said "I only have a little cough". Against my better judgement, I let her go.

Last year when SS got sick, she didn't even tell me she wasn't feeling well and when the teacher asked her why, She told her I would just send her to school sick anyway. That warranted a call from the teacher, she didn't believe SS thankfully. But what crap ARE they talking out there that people DO believe.

Anyway, I get the call from the school nurse. I go to pick her up. I am pissed. Because the babying starts. "Poor baby is not feeling well, blah blah blah."

I told them what transpired this morning. I told them they (the kids) do it because they are babied and that they need to stop...really. Jaws dropped. I'm sure they were talking about me when I left.

Yes, she is sick. But she is going to be 9. She lied to me. Do I excuse the lie because she is sick? No. This is a huge issue in therapy. Their lack of honesty. All of them.

Oh, I'm leaving the part out about her freaking hacking up a lung in the nurses office. I wish I could record the sound in my house because all you would hear is the clacking of my keyboard. Not a single cough once we left the school. Not. one.

This isn't a case of "oh, I love school so much and MY FRIENDS! I would die if I missed playing with them and so I want to go to school!" Because at her age, I would've expected something like that.

I am just beyond and let me just say BEYOND tired of people thinking they know these kids or letting them slide because of their backgrounds. Yes, they had the worst possible childhood up to a certain point and that is now their past. It will never be completely gone. But STOP...stop! making it their today and their future.

Can't these people understand? They are making things worse.

Don't tell me these are your kids, because they are not.
Don't look at me like you know something, because you don't.

I may look like I'm 12 and you may think you have some experience on me but I can guarantee that I've been through more than you can ever fathom and that's light compared to what the kids have been through, so don't make assumptions.

Do not speak to me like I am ignorant because the children have issues.
Do not undermine me with your useless comments.

Do not parent my children.
Do not cast judgment on me because you...yes, you and you know who you are could not step one foot into my shoe and make it out alive.

You may think I am full of shit and that's fine. But I live it and I know it. I Thank GOD! for the new therapist who has worked with treatment foster youth and is working with the kids and sees what I am going through and understands! Thank God for her because now I know I am not crazy and that I AM doing the right things.

Finally someone who does get it and who is helping.

Thank God for hearing and answering my prayers.

Without the new therapist, I would still be floundering and feeling as if I were doing the wrong things and like I was a meanie. I understand feeling sorry for the kids, that was our first mistake, because they took it and ran with it and used it against us. But I wouldn't tell anyone else how to raise their child(ren) so why do people think they can tell me how?

A tale of two meltdowns

Boy has today been up and down. We start off bright and early with CDQ having a major meltdown. She was in the bathroom and strawberry shortcake had to go so she told CDQ to only do her hair (apparently CDQ likes to stare at herself for long stretches of time).

CDQ didn't like that so she simulated punching a fist into her other hand and then lifted her fists to strawberry shortcake(SS). When SS came to tell me about it CDQ denied it and said she was just cracking her knuckles (which I hate) and then I immediately knew she was lying. I told her she was and then she started the fake crying.

At this point I had it. They hadn't even had breakfast yet. I told her to just go on and do her fake feeling sorry for herself crying and get it over with. She flew into a full tantrum where she even tried to get Poufy in trouble.

I took Poufy out of the room and CDQ started screaming. I gave everyone else breakfast and cranked up radio disney. She screamed louder. We were hitting the half hour mark when she started kicking my walls.

I was beyond had it. The Ca social worker had told me to put them outside when they did that, but well I don't know if that is something I should do, I don't think it would work with that child.

I decided to try the therapeutic hold that the new therapist showed me how to do for the boy. It worked. It took about 10 minutes and she so milked it. She kept saying "help" and "it hurts" but I know neither was warranted especially since she was limp in my arms and I had no need to hold her tight against me. I just restrained her arms loosely so she wouldn't lash out at me. The way the therapist taught me is if they are really thrashing you have to hold them tightly. But she was loving the attention from having me there and away from everyone else.

I kept asking her if she was done yet and if it hurt any,you think it would have stopped sooner, no? She irritates me because she is so attention hungry. We give her positive attention but she wants negative. That is what truly makes her happy.

When she was done I told her I was going to leave her for 10 minutes to pull herself together and then she could come out and have breakfast. When I went to get her, she was eerily normal and even happy...huh? I don't get it.

Then right before church, the boy decided he was going to take a stab at showing what he's made of. He threw a total tantrum. I didn't use the hold on him. I was way to pissed to go near him.

Here's a replay.

me: Hey, you guys get out some cute jeans. They can have stuff on them (they aren't allowed to wear embellished jeans at school, school uniforms only.) just make sure they are nice.

the boy: What Sasha?

me: Not you boy.

I had already told the boy he was going to wear his dress pants with his Christmas sweater. I did not see this as something for a 6 year old to tantrum about. I went on handing out the sweaters I had bought for the girl's to wear to church. It was too cold for them to wear dresses.

I guess the boy wasn't happy that I hadn't noticed him so he escalated. I hit the roof and told him unless he wanted to wear butterfly jeans and a girl sweater, I had no idea what he was crying about. I reminded him what he had picked out to wear.

He bawled even louder.

I told him to go to his room and take a nap. Not really doable without missing church, but I had no idea what else to do. He seemed like he needed a nap. Well, that started the whole screaming "I wanna go to church" then the kicking. I told him to get in his room and the screaming was even louder.

Meanwhile the girls continued to get dressed. I decided that if the boy wanted to act like a baby then I would treat him like a baby. He wasted his getting ready time tantruming and by the time it was time to go he had calmed down. I took him to church in his Pj's. I told him to get his shoes on and put on his jacket and off we went.

He was mortified.

On a happier note, they were little angels at church and for that we took them out to IHOP where they thanked us and insisted they loved us forever and ever.

The end to a crazy day but good at any rate.

Birthdays, birthdays, birthdays!!!

Holy cow!

I just realized I have back to back birthdays until March!

The oldest has her birthday on Feb. 23rd. She'll be 12.
Then Strawberry Shortcake has hers March 5th and she'll be 9.
But before that CDQ has her birthday on Feb. 29th and will be 8.
Before all that Poufy will have her birthday this month on the 18th and she will turn 7.

*phew*

So for now I have two 6 year olds (Poufy and the boy), then for what? about a month I will have two 7 year olds (Poufy and CDQ). Then for about a week I will have two 8 year olds (CDQ and Strawberry Shortcake) and then Strawberry Shortcake will turn 9.

By the end of the first week of March I will have 12, 9, 8,7,and 6. The boy doesn't turn 7 until November.

Did you get all that? lol

Overwhelmed!

Not entirely in a bad way...actually not in a bad way at all.

I mean I just paid almost all the bills. I've discovered that our registration is up and somehow our car insurance has lapsed . I have to admit, we have Triple A and so far it sucks. The rep we had made a total mess of everything. I think he cancelled our stuff and wrote down that we called in and did it. Argh! I have yet to call them and I am dreading it.

Which is odd because I had them for roadside assistance and all that and I loved it. Maps and discounts and all that stuff. Loved.it. Ahhh, too bad.

I called to see if my oldest got into Catholic school today. Still no word, I had to leave a message. For some reason that all makes me tense. It's almost like I am waiting for my own admission letter. lol But I know she needs it (as do the others) badly. The structure they can provide is just priceless and sadly the public school has their hands tied to be able to do anything that these children would really need.

But I am praying that she gets in and gradually someway some how we will get all 5 in, eventually. It's expensive but then when you really look at it, it's not. Does that make sense? I believe it's an education that every child deserves. The levels that they teach at and the accountability. Stuff that I know some of the public school teachers wish they could do but instead are teaching for a test.

I have to keep telling myself to just breathe. That's how important and pivotal I think this decision is going to be in our lives and it's almost like the religious aspects of going to the Catholic School would just be a bonus!

I've started research from the wonderful and totally appreciated advice of MommaOfMany on Reactive Attachment Disorder. Just from going to the Mayo Clinic online I can see that the kids definitely have signs of this both inhibited and disinhibited. I'll have to bring it up to their therapist after a little bit more research but I think this is what they have along with a few other disorders.

In the same vein. I *heart* the new therapist. The old therapist was ok. But I love that we have goals and plans and that the kids know what to expect when they get there. For instance, I guess I'll call my 8 soon to be 9 year old Strawberry Shortcake (SS), SS had her appointment yesterday and she was so excited because she was going to do some drawing and play with the dollhouse. Just the fact that she knew what she was going in to seemed to set her mind at ease. I could tell a lot of the nervousness and jitters were almost completely gone.

I also love that there is actual dialogue between Hubs and I and the therapist. She actually offers solutions and ideas for almost everything that we talk about. Plus, she seems to be trying to diagnose the kids rather than just letting things slide by. I don't know exactly what the other therapist was doing exactly, it seemed like pulling teeth to try to get him to say anything much less commit to anything.

The other thing that interests me, is that the new pediatrician recommended this therapist and when I called her she had only one opening. As of today, she is seeing 3 of the kids. As the weeks have progressed. She had a child who had a change of placement and a child who had surgery so they were transferred or put on hold for now which opened up spaces for our kids. Today we find out if she will have openings for our last two. It seems like we will because she tried to contact the person and their phone number has been disconnected. Divine intervention, perhaps?

This new therapist has helped me to relax a little because I finally feel like we are getting help. Before, I felt like things were just in a continuous downward spiral. I can actually see changes in SS and she's only had 3 sessions. Plus, she gave me a tip and demonstration for the Boy when he has his next tantrum. I just feel like we are accomplishing something.

Lastly for this post because I fear I've already dumped too much of my brain in this post.

Hubs and I have a fertility consultation on the 28th. The day before my 32nd birthday.

This is what overwhelmed me this morning, like the final straw, so to speak. It's not bad...

I expected to call and make an appointment to have a consultation. You know, be presented with procedures that are available to us and what they entail. A discussion on costs, etc...

Uh. No.

There will be discussion, but *I* will be having an ultrasound that day and more than likely there will be labs that day as well.

I'm freaking out a little.

Just because I thought we'd have more time to mull over which procedures and if it's even feasible given our finances (I need another job!) before we jumped into it all. I'm probably the opposite of most people who go there. They probably have been wanting children for years and were ready like yesterday. But I really want to know what the hell is going on before I jump in with both feet and I feel like I have no choice.

Maybe it will be different then what I am now thinking.

It's just right after they asked me my name they asked me my age. When they asked why we were looking into fertility I told them Hubs was a quadriplegic and they sort of skimmed past that. She told me the cost of the first consult and that I would be having an ultrasound that day.

What bugs me is that--well, given that I've never tried to conceive, why are they starting with me? If Hubs isn't producing any sperm, what is the point of checking me? I'd be all for it if we knew that Hubs had viable sperm already because it would be my luck that everyone in my family can look at a man and get pregnant and I couldn't but...why is this falling on me first? I know something to ask the Doc.

*breathe*

Ok, that's it for now. I need a glass a water and to get back to mindlessly cleaning my house.

Even though I am overwhelmed, things are looking up.

She can see clearly now

Here's Pouf! I've decided to call her that since her hair is always one big Poufball. She lost her front tooth (toof!) two days ago and we just picked up her new glasses today. She's actually excited about them.
They said by the time she is 12 she will be a candidate for contacts and when she hits 20, lasix will be recommended.
I was surprised at how much she couldn't see. After we picked up her glasses we went to Costco to grab some pizza for dinner. As we drove by places she was exclaiming: "I didn't know there were lights there!", "That's a real Chuck E. Cheese's!, I didn't even know we had one!"
There weren't any indications that we could see (no pun intended) that she couldn't see.
I have two more that will more than likely need glasses. As a matter of fact I know CDQ will need them. It's crazy but I'm glad we are catching this early. I was there when they did the basic eye test during their physical and I thought they were messing around and purposely missing the letters because they were doing so bad on the test.
However, there's actually a machine that can read the kid's eyes at the eye doctor and he basically said kids can't fake it anymore. As I watched Pouf! retake the test at the eye doctor's I was facing her and could see how hard she was trying and see how she was missing letters. It was crazy.
I can't help but think of all the problems these kids have both mentally and physically and think that my sister honestly believes that she has no part in this. That the fact that Pouf's lenses are too long and she can't see doesn't have anything to do with how she didn't take any prenatal and only ate ice while she was pregnant so she wouldn't get fat. How can some people think that, think those things?
It makes no sense to me.

Gingerbread Fun

Here are the kids decorating their Gingerbread boys and girls that I baked them. I still haven't constructed the house because well... I don't want to be frustrated right now. Ya know? I will sometime within the next couple of days.

Here they are with their final masterpieces. The boy caught a baseball with his head earlier that day. He's pretty good at that.

I leave you with a pic of my sister, here she is impersonating her gingerbread. In all fairness she didn't realize I had the camera on and was taking pictures. I was lucky to swing around and catch this gem on film.Good thing she doesn't have a computer or internet access, huh? lol

Just being an Aunt

For the next two weeks I have my older nephew, I, staying with us. I didn't realize what a stress it was to be the "parent". I mean, I know it's stressful. But, last week when both my nephews were here with both their parents, I was the fun one. I was just the Aunt.

Hershey's kisses right before bed for a 2 year old ??? NO PROBLEM! How about I toss in some baby marshmallows with that? HELP YOURSELF! After all, do I really have to worry about it? His Mom and Dad can brush his teeth and chase him down all night. Right? I knew it bothered me that I couldn't just be the Aunt who spoiled them and that I had to be the "mean one". But I didn't realize it was a weight until these guys came to town. E (above) was so cute. I'm always strong with them when they first get here so they know they can't walk all over me or my home. Once they know the rules it gets fun. This little guy was hilarious. By the time he left he could say my name perfectly. Everything had my name in it and had to be seen by me. He would call out "Hey Sash!" Too funny! I hear that he's filling everyone's ears with my name back at his house.
I got to spend a few hours out shopping and talking with I (above). It was great to just have the one. I bought him a few things for his stay, as we weren't really planning on him to stay. Things just kind of fell into place for him to be able to stay here and visit after they were already here.

It used to be like that with the other kids. My oldest used to call me for advice and I used to take her to the movies. I used to buy all of them toys and clothes. I even took a few with their mother to Sea World back in the day.

I've always felt like it was my job to show them something better. But now that I have a different label. It's hard to know if I can ever get back that Aunt title or even find a balance between the two. I feel like I have to be more responsible and less fun because I can't have them thinking of me as a friend. It sucks.

I have a lot of thinking to do. It's such a weird space to be in.

Is it Christmas yet?

Scrawn by the tree at exactly 12:01 am. Wondering where Santa was with her Kitty Kisses.

Of course, I couldn't tell her this was the reason Santa hadn't showed up yet. He wouldn't go to sleep for nothing.

Polar Express Day

So last Friday was Polar Express Day for my Kindergartener. I have to admit I felt soooo odd as I watched them all run off towards their classes, my eyes resting on him running in his PJs. It just didn't seem right that he was going to school like that. But hey, he had a blast.

They watched Polar Express and did Polar Express activities all day long. When he came home he was so excited. He had that huge bell hanging around his neck.

Later that night, I told Hubs maybe we should have a Polar Express day at home next year where we buy those huge bells and secretly remove the clappers from all of them and then both of us pretend to hear them all day long. Wouldn't that be fun?

Mom?

Although I have plenty to say about my own Mom, this post isn't actually about her.

It dawned on me about 3 weeks ago that even though I will never be "mom" to these kids, I will be the "mom" they remember. I've been thinking of it as "Oh, I have to make this holiday or that event special so they will remember" but I never thought of the fact that I will be their mother figure.

When they think back about life and the memories they have, they will think of the traditions we have created...sure. But as Hubs and I reflect over traditions, no matter how good or bad our mothers were/are, we still refer back to the things that they have taught us and their mannerisms and their quirks and special talents.

I started to wonder if I was just full of myself or if, even though I am only an Aunt, these kids will remember me like Hubs and I remember our mothers.

Today (we were supposed to go to a Christmas party but we got snowed in sort of ), we ended up having the therapist drop in and then spent the good part of the afternoon sorting through clothes. Just seeing what fit and what needed to be passed on to other children. I had the girls doing the toe touch test to see if dresses were too short.

My 6 year old was bending over in a cute little Dora dress that I know she adores when I told her "nope! too short!" She grunted, stood up and twirled towards me and just threw her arms around me. She said "You are a very good Mom." and then she ran off.

Even now, as I type this, it's hard to choke back the tears.

Sometimes I wonder "why?" I've felt stupid cutting their sandwiches into dinosaur shapes or sending them notes written on their snacks. I even wonder why I'm killing myself with laundry until 4 am. They never seem to notice or care.

But I guess they do. In some weird way, that makes all the difference.

What does it mean?

Ok, I had to be harsh on some of the kids. Some of you Moms will laugh at me. But... I couldn't figure out what to do with the two that were acting like total monsters.

I have grounded them, I have taken away privileges, desserts, toys, etc... I've sent them to bed early. I've tried to give them foods they don't like (you know the whole liver and broccoli concept.) Nothing works. They appear like heartless little...well you know.

Ready for the harshness? Yesterday, I allowed them to develop and choose their own punishments. That was hilarious. They listed everything we've already done. As each child alternated coming forth with their brilliant grounding ideas...we shot them down.

"Nope...tried that remember? You still didn't listen."

"Uh, uh... you said you would and you never did."

etc...

What they thought was a blessing soon became a burden-- they were frustrated.

"See what you guys do to us...frustrating isn't it? No fun."

We eventually compromised. The 7 year old will be doing all things dog... food, water and poop for two weeks. This is huge because the she claims to be very scared of going outside. Of course, when she wants to play...no problem.

The 6 year old decided she was going to de-weed the back side of the house. She said she would do the whole yard. But uh, we live on half an acre and actually most of it has been done already. Just not the back.

So we will see.

This morning... the one with dog duty was out there dumping out the ice block and getting the dogs fresh water. She fed them and even de-poo'ed (new word because I said so. lol ) them. I didn't expect her to pick up the poo in the morning but I will leave it.

As all the kids filed out of the van. The 6 year old lingered. I was saying my "good-byes" and "Have a good day!" stuff when she stopped and hugged me tightly.

I just don't get it.

They treat us so badly. I was telling Hubs this morning that I was starting to wonder if they thought being treated badly was a way of expressing love. They love us better or at least show us after they have treated us the worst.

Isn't that what an abuser does? They treat you like crap and then throw that curve ball in and make you feel special?

It's all so confusing.

She WANTED this...

This is Crazy Drama Queen (CDQ)-- She had a dentist appointment on Monday. She was getting a cavity filled and sealants.

When she came to me last year, she came with big thick brown spots on her two front teeth. I didn't know what it was but soon found out it was tooth decay build up. (ick) She had been working on it and brushing it down and it was almost completely gone.

The Dentist said that they were baby teeth and that the nerves were dead so there was no danger of the cavity going into her new teeth. (Ok, if I don't make sense it's because I've only had four cavities in my life and I got them when I was 19-20 and I had braces. The brackets in the back that go around the back teeth is where I got the cavities on the sides of the teeth where the brackets covered. So, all this crown, cavity, cement stuff is new to me.)

He said the teeth were basically dead and they could be pulled or we could just wait until they fell off.

Well CDQ decided she wanted them pulled because she wanted to buy a bottle water and a half a pickle at school. I could see the wheels turning. All that attention when she goes back to school and when everyone saw her....whew!

She's going to live on this until the teeth come in. Really, she's all about drama and attention to a point of obsession.

So here she is without her two front teeth. See that crazed look? I had to remind her that they had ALREADY pulled the teeth.

Here she is relaxed. Sadly, she still hasn't realized that she is not going to be able to eat that half pickle tomorrow without some work.

There she is pointing to the tooth fairy pillow where both her teeth were nestled safely.

Note that I got smart and hung the pillow on the front door knob. It was torture waiting until they fell asleep and not forgetting about it, ya know? Not only that, it's like mission impossible when they move the pillow from the location that you both put it at before they went to sleep. Then I'm stuck looking carefully under them, under the bed, arm stuck deep under the pillow.

This is just easier.

She did well, she didn't really know what she was in for. She didn't know about the pliers or needle. She freaked out a little until I told her she was doing way better than her older sister did.

Kids...they are crazy!

Sunday, November 11, 2007

What do you do?

What do you do when you have 5 kids

who behave like animals?
who lie?
who steal from you?
who break things because they are physically able to?
who keep secrets?
who are boy crazy?
who are hateful?
who are disrespectful?
who are filthy?
etc...etc...

I am at the end of my rope.

My sister did a good job ruining these kids and I don't think I can fix them.

We have simple basic rules. They choose not to keep them.

Grounding them, taking away activities, time out, none of it works.

They say it takes time. It's been a year and there is no progress. What if they don't change? What if I end up like my mother? I'm already half way there and it's only been a year.

I feel like if the kids stay like this, they will kill me.

I'm not getting any help from social workers or the therapist. They don't seem to have any help to give. I don't know what my rights are and it's like because I am related I have no rights.

I've tried all that I know how to try. I'm not asking for too much.

All I ask is that they be honest, try hard at everything they do and take care of things.

It's too hard for them. It's easier for them to be devious, nasty and lazy.

I've made up incentive programs with rewards and everything for them. They don't care. I have mini parties with fun foods and movies or games. They don't care. I've taken everything from them and stripped things down to essentials. They don't care.

What's a person to do?

Can I Still Call Myself A Blogger???

Really???

I know I still have a menu to plan. I have like 4 tackles that I've done and never posted yet. Tips...I've 4 of those too.

First it started without being able to use my right arm. I couldn't lift it or move it much cause I sort of wanted to die when I did. Finally that went away and Hubs bought me this wonderful gift I *still* haven't told you about and yet...still am using right now.

Then I was hooked on two different games that kept me going because I'm obsessive and HAD to finish them in one sitting.

Then my left arm wouldn't work. Same deal as the right but now on the left.

Which brings me to the big blow up of 2007...

Picture this...

Yesterday morning, we seem to be moving along fine. I send the kids out to the van so I can take them to school. I lock up, so I'm the last one leaving.

I go out to the van...silence. Kids sitting in a row facing the front with smirks.

W.T.F !?!

You might be saying "What's wrong with that?"

Not these kids. Spawn of the Devil Herself. They have been awful, terrible, the worst.

I ask what is going on.

The worst of the bunch of the girls pipes up "Nothing, we just changed seats."

The oldest was not in the van, she was opening the gates for me (oh, yeah...did I mention I have gates now? ARGH...so much unshared!)

That child...if she is awake she is lying.

I looked at the oldest of those who were in the car and she pointed to the one that just told me nothing. I asked what she had done. She said that the Evil One had found presents in the back and showed them...

SHIP!!!*

I had bought a ton of stocking stuffers and totally forgot to bring them in the house, some gifts, etc...

This little witch searched the van when she got in and then went through the stuff and made sure she showed them all.

I.HIT.THE.ROOF.

I can't believe I had forgotten those things because I was soooooo excited about being done and the things I had found. I got about $300 worth of stuff at the Dollar store for 7 kids for only $98.

Disney Princesses, Spiderman, Winnie the Pooh. We are talking good stuff.

It was the last straw. It was so bad I told them it was all going back and I almost even told them there was no Santa!

I can't even begin to describe what they have been putting us through this past month and the boy. I'm not sure what they are going to do with him because I no longer want to adopt him. Even Hubs is at the point where he's saying the boy has to go too if he doesn't change.

He needs help...they aren't getting it for him and my hands are tied. I don't know what to do. Bt the final straw is him carving into his dresser and then attempting to stab two of his sisters with his toothbrush. I can't have a kid like that, he kill us all in our sleep.

Instead, I finally told them I've had enough. I've always told them if they didn't want to be with me then they needed to tell their social worker and I'd have no problem with them going because I wasn't going to try to live with kids who didn't want to be here.

But what do I do when they are hating us for everything their mother and father did to them?

I just leveled with them and told them the truth.

I know what it's like for people to lie to you and tell you bad things about your parents. I was told my mom didn't love me and that she is a snake. To an extent they are both true. But when they were said to me at the age of 5-8 they were said out of hate for my mother.

I told the kids that their mother signed them to me. She signed the paper to send them all to me and that I had agreed that I would help her until she finished her classes and got them back, but she didn't finish her classes. As soon as they came to me she quit. We are stuck with each other whether we like it or not. Whatever problems they have with her are with her and that hubs and I were just trying to help. We didn't take them from anyone. We never planned to have them forever. So, if someone said I took them or "stole" them from their mom it is a lie.

I'll probably get in trouble for telling them that. But did I tell them their mom took her new bf to Disneyland after she had her rights terminated? no. Did I tell them that she's shacking up with any guy who will screw her trying to have replacement kids? no.

I explained to them that I am all they have. I am the only responsible person in their whole entire family who they will give them to. I even explained how I am not entirely related to them either. That's why I am the only one who can keep them.

It was just an awful morning, my arm still wasn't working. I don't know what to do with the stuff now since surely "Santa" can't bring the same stuff that was in the van. Right?

I'm just heartbroken, worn down and tired. All those people who said they didn't want me to wear myself out have disappeared. For the first time in my life I have been asking for help and there is none to be found. Figures.

Today my arm works. I have to make five dentist appointments, five doctors appointments. Hubs just got his flu and pneumonia shots yesterday. But we think he has a UTI so I have to run that down to the lab.

Halloween stuff is put away and Thanksgiving stuff is up. I'm starting to freak out about Christmas.

Some day soon, I hope to share with you my new Bettas. The cool gifts Hubby has given me and just stuff in general. But for now... I will post when I can what I can. (Usually when I write a post like this,I suddenly have time to post.lol)

How are you all doing?

*Have you seen the new carmax commercial?

"Are you shipping me?"

My new way of trying to cut back on my cussing.

Say Cheese!

So Wednesday before Catechism I took the kids to get their first family picture with all of them in it together.

Let me just say...what in the world was I thinking?

I guess maybe I was thinking because they are 5, 6, 7, 8, and 11 they could pull it together and just look at the photographer and smile. Uh...no. They couldn't. The poor photographer pulled them apart and did individuals and then tried again for the group. I felt bad for her. I've taken several pics of them all together and yeah I might have to retake a few but for the most part, it hasn't been too bad . But for some reason it was like a switch was activated in a couple of them that prevented them from taking a picture.

The boy and the 7 year old were driving me crazy. The boy could not just relax and smile. For some reason he was really tense. Like someone threw a bucket of cold water on his back tense. At one point we had a perfect picture with the exception of just him. He looked like Bush ...for real. I'm not trying to offend anyone but we all know that Bush looks less than intelligent sometimes. I said we couldn't let it go like that. The photographer agreed and quickly took another shot. The 7 year old kept looking to us (for approval, I guess) right before the photographer would snap the picture.

Finally about 10 minutes until Catechism started we were done. I kept apologizing to the woman with the toddler who had been waiting because of how long my kids were taking.

I have the printed black and white proofs. I think for all that we went through they came out pretty good. I'd love to post them when they come in but I don't think I will. It sucks because there are certain people that I am trying to protect the children from. Because we are related, this can't be a totally closed adoption so I'm sure at some point those people will find me. Instead of respecting my wishes, I know they will do whatever they can to sabotage what we have going now. That's why I can't ever be as free as I'd like to be and I can't share many of the things I would like to.

It's hard to know what's sharing too much. It's also funny in a way that I don't mind sharing with "strangers" but rather with the family members that I wish would just go away.

Maybe some how down the line, I will be able to figure out how to share with those that I want to and how to keep my family members out.

Until then, it's walking on egg shells.
